LCW Lounge Chair

Designed in 1946 by Charles and Ray Eames, the LCW (Lounge Chair Wood) remains one of the most celebrated and influential furniture designs of the twentieth century. Developed as part of the Eameses’ groundbreaking molded plywood experiments, the chair introduced a new approach to comfort, combining organic form, ergonomic support, and industrial innovation in a design that continues to feel remarkably contemporary.

This particular example is especially noteworthy for its early production characteristics. The chair features the desirable 5-2-5 screw configuration, a detail associated with production prior to Herman Miller’s takeover of manufacturing in 1949. Based on the screw alignment, measurements, and construction details, this chair was most likely produced by the Evans Plywood Company, the manufacturer responsible for the earliest LCW chairs and the realization of Charles and Ray Eames’ pioneering molded plywood designs during the late 1940s.

The Evans-produced LCWs are highly regarded among collectors for their historical significance, representing the earliest chapter in the production history of one of the most iconic chairs of the twentieth century. These early examples reflect the close collaboration between the Eames Office and Evans, whose technical expertise made the ambitious plywood designs possible.

The molded plywood shells appear to be executed in ash, a timber commonly used in early production examples and valued for its strength, flexibility, and pronounced grain. Finished in a black stain, the wood has developed a rich patina over decades of use, enhancing the depth and character of the surface while preserving the chair’s sculptural qualities.

The chair is fitted with metal glides to the feet. These are believed to be later additions and were likely installed during the chair’s lifetime to improve durability and everyday use. Aside from this modification, the chair retains the characteristics and presence expected of an early Evans-produced example.

Today, the LCW is widely regarded as a landmark of modern furniture design and remains one of the most sought-after works by Charles and Ray Eames. Early Evans-produced examples are particularly appreciated for their rarity, historical importance, and direct connection to the formative years of the Eames plywood program.

The chair is in very good vintage condition, with a beautiful patina and minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.
