The iconic “Groovy” F598 lounge chairs, designed by Pierre Paulin for Artifort in the early 1970s, are among the most recognizable expressions of Space Age design and experimental post-war modernism. With their unmistakable sculptural “M” shaped silhouette, the chairs perfectly capture Paulin’s revolutionary approach to seating, where comfort, form, and visual playfulness merge into a single fluid gesture.
Rather than relying on traditional rigid construction, Paulin designed the Groovy chair as an organic volume with soft, flowing curves that embrace the body in a natural and ergonomic way. The low profile, rounded contours, and open negative space beneath the seat create a dynamic architectural presence, making the design appear almost floating and weightless despite its substantial form. The result is both futuristic and inviting, a perfect reflection of the optimistic and forward-thinking spirit of the 1970s.
These particular examples have been newly reupholstered in Karandash bouclé by Dedar, in a vibrant lemon-yellow tone that enhances the expressive and playful nature of the design. The richly textured bouclé fabric adds depth and tactility to the smooth sculptural shape, while the bold color gives the chairs a striking visual identity that feels both distinctly vintage and remarkably contemporary.
Resting on their original, subtle aluminium bases, the chairs maintain the elegant balance between softness and precision that defines Pierre Paulin’s work for Artifort. Today, the Groovy chair remains one of Paulin’s most celebrated lounge designs, highly sought after for its sculptural presence, exceptional comfort, and enduring relevance within collectible twentieth-century design.
The perfect fit to complete your interior.
