Hans J. Wegner

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of Denmark’s most celebrated furniture designers and a leading figure in Scandinavian modern design. Trained as a cabinetmaker, Wegner became famous for his mastery of craftsmanship and his ability to create furniture that was both functional and beautifully sculptural.

He designed more than 500 chairs during his career, many of which became international icons. His most famous works include the Wishbone Chair (CH24), the Round Chair, and the Shell Chair. Wegner’s designs are known for their organic forms, natural materials, and exceptional attention to detail, especially in wood joinery.

Often called the “Master of the Chair,” Wegner believed that a chair should be beautiful from every angle and comfortable for everyday use. His work helped establish Danish design as a global standard for timeless, human-centered modernism.
