Bengt Ruda (1918–1999) was a Swedish furniture designer and architect best known for his influential work in Scandinavian modern design. He first gained recognition through his work for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), where he helped develop the innovative Triva series, one of Sweden’s earliest self-assembly furniture concepts.
In 1957, Ruda became IKEA’s first formally trained designer, playing an important role in shaping the company’s modern identity during its early years. His designs combined practicality, simplicity, and elegant craftsmanship, making Scandinavian furniture more accessible to everyday people.
Among his most notable creations are the Cavelli armchair and several mid-century chairs, cabinets, and tables that remain highly sought after by collectors today. Ruda’s work reflects the timeless Scandinavian ideals of functionality, clean lines, and democratic design.
