Baccarat was founded in 1764 in the town of Baccarat in northeastern France, where King Louis XV granted permission for the establishment of a glassworks. Initially producing window glass, mirrors and tableware, the manufactory gradually developed into one of France’s foremost producers of fine crystal. The company began focusing increasingly on crystal during the early 19th century and became internationally recognised for the exceptional clarity and precision of its production.
Over the following centuries, Baccarat produced an extensive range of crystal glassware, chandeliers, decorative objects and lighting, combining highly skilled craftsmanship with technically demanding cutting, engraving and finishing techniques. Its work has ranged from elaborate 19th-century designs to more restrained modern pieces, often created in collaboration with prominent designers. Baccarat remains closely associated with the tradition of French luxury crystal and continues production in its historic home in Lorraine.
