Swedish Modern Brass & Wood Table Lamps, Set of 2
Sweden, 1950s
Price category:
€950 – €1.400
A pair of Scandinavian Modern table lamps, made in Sweden in the 1950s in brass and wood, with all the easy charm of a well-loved reading light. Each one rises from a round brass base through a fluted wooden stem and a flexible gooseneck arm to a bell-shaped brass shade, and side by side they lean towards each other like two friends deep in conversation.
They belong to the gentle, human strand of Swedish design that flourished after the war. It was a softer modernism than strict functionalism, built on honest materials, everyday usefulness and a little warmth in every line. Here the brass gives the light its glow, the carved wood gives the hand something pleasant to hold, and the gooseneck lets you bend the shade exactly where you need it. Even the shade’s small flared collar at the top is a thoughtful touch, letting a soft halo escape upward.
Decades of use have mellowed the brushed brass to a deep honey tone, with a gentle patina that catches the light. The fluted stems carry a reddish warmth that echoes the metal beautifully. Inside, the white-lined shades send a clean pool of light downward. Picture them on either side of a bed, angled in for late-night reading, or framing a desk where they turn an evening of letters into something quietly special.
