An exceptionally large table lamp designed by Grillo & Tonello for High Society in Italy in 1972. Characterised by its elegant hourglass silhouette and architectural proportions, the lamp is a refined example of Italian lighting design from the early 1970s, combining a sculptural metal base with the understated warmth of a natural silk shade.

The distinctive base is crafted from nickel-plated brass and features an elongated, gently curved profile. Its form begins with a broad, geometric foot that gradually narrows towards the centre before widening again into an angular upper section. The continuous transition between these elements creates a beautifully balanced silhouette, with subtle changes in curvature giving the design a sense of movement and visual lightness. The softly reflective metal finish accentuates the contours of the base, allowing light to reveal its carefully considered geometry.

Italian lighting design during the 1970s was characterised by an exploration of sculptural forms, refined materials and the relationship between decorative objects and architectural space. This lamp reflects that approach particularly well, combining a strong geometric composition with a restrained material palette. Rather than relying on elaborate ornamentation, its character emerges from the proportions of the base and the contrast between the solid metal structure and the softness of the shade.

The lamp has been fitted with a new, generously proportioned cylindrical shade made from raw silk. Its natural, slightly irregular texture provides a pleasing contrast to the smooth metal base, while the warm off-white colour complements the subtle tones of the nickel-plated brass. The tall cylindrical shape reinforces the vertical character of the design, creating a harmonious composition between the shade and the slender base.

Standing an impressive 96.5 centimetres (38.0 in) tall, this lamp has a considerable architectural presence. Its generous proportions make it particularly suitable for a large sideboard, console or occasional table, where it can function as both an elegant source of ambient lighting and a sculptural decorative object. The combination of its distinctive silhouette, refined materials and substantial scale makes it a particularly appealing example of Italian lighting from the period.
