Brutalistic Circle Pine Mirror ‘272’
Sweden, 1970s
Price category:
€350 – €600
Warm, chunky and quietly sculptural, this Scandinavian Modern round wall mirror was made in Sweden by Glas Mäster Markaryd in the 1970s. Its broad pine frame, model 272, still carries the maker’s paper label on the back, and the wood wears its grain like a fingerprint.
Glas Mäster worked from Markaryd in southern Sweden. In the 1970s Swedish design turned towards pine, a native, honest wood that made homes feel rooted and relaxed, and this mirror carries that mood. Four thick segments meet at angled joints, each with its grain running a different way, so the ring reads as something built by hand rather than simply turned. A stepped, bevelled inner edge draws the eye into the glass and gives the plain circle real depth, along with the robust, generous weight the decade loved.
The pine has mellowed to deep honey and amber, its tight stripes catching the light wherever the facets turn. The label records oiled pine and float glass, and the surface keeps a soft, satin feel under the hand. Hang it above a sideboard in the dining room, where the circle echoes plates and candlelight, or in a hallway for a warm glance on the way out. Against white plaster or a deep green wall, the wood glows like late afternoon sun.
