An elegant ceramic table lamp designed by Einar Johansen for Søholm Stentøj in Denmark during the 1960s. Characterised by its sculptural form and richly textured surface, the lamp is a fine example of Danish mid-century ceramic design, combining geometric decoration with the expressive qualities of glazed stoneware.
The compact base features a gently tapering body with rounded shoulders and a narrow neck, finished in a deep blue glaze with subtle variations in tone. Its most distinctive feature is the geometric relief decoration covering the front, where a repeating pattern of triangular shapes creates an intricate interplay of light and shadow. The recessed elements are accentuated by darker tones within the glaze, adding depth and emphasising the craftsmanship of the ceramic surface. The newly fitted off-white fabric shade introduces a soft contrast to the darker base, creating a well-balanced composition.
Einar Johansen was among the notable ceramic designers associated with Søholm Stentøj, the Danish pottery manufacturer based on the island of Bornholm. During the mid-twentieth century, Søholm became particularly recognised for its decorative stoneware, producing a wide range of ceramics and lighting distinguished by their experimental glazes, textured surfaces and modern forms. Johansen’s designs frequently incorporated geometric relief patterns and carefully considered glazing techniques, giving his work a distinctive architectural quality.
With its rich colour, tactile surface and modest proportions, this table lamp is equally suited to a side table, desk or bedside setting. It represents the characteristic combination of craftsmanship and modern Scandinavian aesthetics found in Danish ceramics of the period.
