‘Norrsken’ Large Glass Bowl

Designed by Tauno Wirkkala for Humppila Oy, the Norrsken bowl is a remarkable piece of Finnish art glass from the 1970s. Translating to “Northern Lights,” the name reflects the bowl’s expressive, organic form and the captivating way its textured surface captures and refracts light.

The bowl is crafted in clear pressed glass with a sculptural freeform silhouette that appears almost frozen in motion. Deep radiating ribs extend from the centre towards the irregular, undulating rim, creating a dramatic interplay of transparency, texture and reflection. The softly frosted surface contrasts beautifully with the polished edges, producing subtle optical effects that change depending on the viewing angle and the surrounding light.

Produced by Humppila Oy, one of Finland’s most respected post-war glass manufacturers, the Norrsken Series exemplifies the Scandinavian fascination with natural forms and the expressive possibilities of glass as a sculptural medium.
