Model FD 137/1 ‘Japan’ lounge chair by Finn Juhl for France & Søn, set of 2

Finn Juhl for France & Søn
Design: 1957 | Manufactured: 1960s

An exceptional pair of Model FD 137/1 ‘Japan’ lounge chairs by Finn Juhl, produced by France & Søn. A refined embodiment of Danish modernism, where craftsmanship, comfort, and cultural inspiration converge.

Designed after Finn Juhl’s first encounter with Japanese architecture, the “Japan” chair translates restraint and balance into a sculptural seating experience. The elegant teak frames, with their slender profiles and subtle brass detailing, create a sense of openness and calm, while the generous proportions invite effortless relaxation.

This particular set is upholstered in a premium wool/linen fabric by De Le Cuona, chosen for its natural texture, depth, and timeless appeal. The upholstery complements the warmth of the teak beautifully, enhancing the chair’s architectural clarity while adding a quiet layer of comfort.

Condition

The chair is in excellent vintage condition, newly reupholstered in high-quality fabric with a solid and well-preserved frame.

About the designer

Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was one of the most influential figures in Danish modern design, celebrated for introducing a sculptural, artistic approach to furniture that set him apart from his contemporaries. Trained as an architect, Juhl treated furniture as three-dimensional art, favouring organic forms, floating elements, and refined craftsmanship over strict functionalism. His designs from the 1940s and 1950s played a pivotal role in bringing Danish modernism to international attention, particularly in the United States, where his work furnished embassies, private homes, and cultural institutions. Today, Finn Juhl’s furniture is regarded as timeless, expressive, and highly collectible, a harmonious balance of comfort, craftsmanship, and artistic vision.
