The AJ Royal Lamp, designed by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen in 1957, is a classic example of modern Danish lighting design. Originally created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the lamp embodies Jacobsen’s signature minimalism and architectural precision. Its distinctive dome-shaped shade, paired with a louvered interior that softens and directs light downward, creates a warm and glare-free ambience.

About the designer

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was a pioneering Danish architect and designer whose career helped shape modern Scandinavian design. After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he began his career as an architect, gaining early recognition for his innovative approach to functionalism. His breakthrough came with the design of the Bellavista housing complex in the 1930s, which showcased his talent for combining clarity, proportion, and simplicity.

Throughout his career, Jacobsen increasingly embraced a holistic design philosophy—often creating not just a building, but every element within it. This approach reached its peak with the SAS Royal Hotel (1958–1960), for which he designed iconic pieces such as the Egg and Swan chairs. Alongside his architectural work, Jacobsen collaborated with leading manufacturers to create enduring furniture, lighting, and household objects that remain classics today.

His career path reflects a seamless blend of architecture and industrial design, grounded in a belief that beauty and function should coexist effortlessly.
