Skipper & Pollux was an Italian furniture and lighting manufacturer known for producing refined tables, desks, storage furniture, seating, and lamps. Although details about the company’s origins remain limited, its work from the 1970s and 1980s has gained renewed recognition on the vintage market. Skipper is especially admired for blending modernist clarity with a sculptural, early postmodern sensibility.
The company collaborated with notable designers including Bruno Gecchelin, Claudio Sallochi, Hans von Klier, and most importantly Angelo Mangiarotti. Gecchelin was central to Skipper’s lighting production, designing minimalist lamps in materials such as Carrara marble and lacquered metal. His Mezzeluna floor lamp (1975) is among Skipper’s most iconic lighting designs. Claudio Sallochi’s Riflessione floor lamp further strengthened the company’s reputation in lighting and is now highly sought after.
In furniture design, Angelo Mangiarotti created Skipper’s most celebrated works. His sculptural approach is exemplified by the Eros table (1970), featuring a marble top balanced on a conical base through gravity alone. Later designs such as the Incas table, Estral shelving system, Chicago chair, and Central table reinforced Skipper’s position at the intersection of modern and postmodern Italian design.
