Hans Engholm (born 1942) and Svend Åge Willumsen (born 1946) are a Danish designer duo known for their expressive, sculptural approach to furniture and object design. Both were educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and began collaborating in the late 1980s, forming a partnership that challenged the restrained functionalism traditionally associated with Danish design. Their work is characterized by a strong artistic identity, where furniture is treated as an architectural and conceptual form rather than a purely utilitarian object.
Engholm and Willumsen are best known for iconic designs such as the Casino Chair, a bold and dynamic seating object that appears almost architectural in structure, and the Smile Table, which introduces humor and movement through its curved, expressive shape. Other works include experimental chairs, benches, and tables that often emphasize tension, balance, and structural visibility, making construction an essential part of the visual expression.
Their designs frequently blur the line between furniture and sculpture, while still remaining functional and well-crafted. By combining traditional craftsmanship with unconventional forms and materials, Engholm and Willumsen expanded the vocabulary of contemporary Danish design.
