An impressive large stoneware table lamp designed by Einar Johansen for Søholm Stentøj in Denmark during the 1960s. Characterised by its elongated silhouette, geometric relief decoration and deep blue glaze, the lamp is a beautiful example of Danish mid-century ceramic lighting, combining sculptural proportions with the expressive qualities of glazed stoneware.

The ceramic base features a tall, slender form consisting of two contrasting sections. The lower cylindrical body is decorated with a distinctive geometric relief pattern, composed of closely spaced horizontal elements arranged in vertical rows. The repeating design creates a rhythmic, almost architectural surface, with subtle variations in depth that become particularly apparent as light moves across the ceramic. A rich, dark blue glaze covers the entire base, with lighter blue highlights accentuating the raised details and adding depth to the textured surface.

Above the decorated lower section, the lamp rises into a long, gently tapering neck with a smooth, uninterrupted finish. This contrast between the elaborate relief decoration and the restrained upper section gives the design a particularly balanced appearance. The deep blue glaze unifies the two elements, while the elongated proportions lend the lamp an elegant, sculptural presence.

Einar Johansen was one of the notable ceramic designers associated with Søholm Stentøj, the Danish pottery manufacturer established on the island of Bornholm in 1835. During the mid-twentieth century, Søholm became recognised for its decorative stoneware and lighting, producing designs characterised by experimental glazes, geometric patterns and carefully considered forms. Johansen's work frequently explored the relationship between surface decoration and simple geometric shapes, creating ceramics that were both functional and visually expressive.

The lamp has been fitted with a new, generously proportioned white fabric shade with a subtly tapered cylindrical silhouette. Its clean lines and light colour provide a pleasing contrast to the dark ceramic base, emphasising the height and slender proportions of the design.

With its considerable height of 83 centimetres, rich ceramic surface and distinctive proportions, this lamp makes an elegant statement on a sideboard, console or occasional table. Its combination of geometric decoration and restrained Scandinavian design gives it a timeless quality that works equally well in contemporary and vintage interiors.
