Källemo

Källemo is a Swedish furniture manufacturer founded in 1973 in Värnamo, Småland, a region long associated with furniture production. From its inception, the company positioned itself as an alternative voice within Scandinavian design, deliberately challenging the restrained, purely functional ideals that had long dominated Nordic furniture culture. Källemo became known for promoting expressive, experimental, and idea-driven design, often described as “anti-functionalism.” Under the artistic direction of Sven Lundh, Källemo collaborated with designers and architects who approached furniture as a form of cultural and artistic expression. The company worked with influential figures such as Jonas Bohlin, Mats Theselius, Hans Sandgren Jakobsen, and Stefan Borselius. Rather than aiming for mass-market appeal, Källemo focused on limited production runs and furniture with strong conceptual identities. Källemo’s designs often combine unconventional materials, bold forms, and references to architecture, history, or popular culture. Notable pieces include Jonas Bohlin’s Concrete chair, a radical object made from reinforced concrete; Mats Theselius’s aluminum armchairs, which blend industrial materials with classical references; and expressive tables, seating, and storage furniture that blur the line between functional object and design statement.
