Svend Aage Holm Sorensen

Svend Aage Holm Sørensen (1913–2004) was a Danish designer best known for his innovative and expressive lighting designs, which occupy a distinctive place within Scandinavian modernism. Trained as a metalworker, Holm Sørensen brought a craftsman’s understanding of material and construction to his work, while also embracing a more sculptural and experimental approach than many of his contemporaries. From the 1950s onward, he designed a wide range of pendant, wall, table, and floor lamps, often produced by manufacturers such as Holm Sørensen & Co. and later Lyfa. His most recognizable designs include dramatic multi-shade pendant lamps, angular wall sconces, and organically shaped copper and brass pendants that play with reflected light and shadow. Many of these lamps feature perforated metal, layered elements, and warm metallic finishes, creating atmospheric, indirect illumination. Holm Sørensen’s lighting designs stand out for their bold forms, artistic freedom, and strong sculptural presence, while still maintaining functional lighting performance. His work bridges craftsmanship and industrial production, and reflects a more expressive side of Danish modern design.
