The ABN table lamp was designed by Dutch designer Aldo van den Nieuwelaar in 1975 as a commission for the Dutch ABN bank. Produced in a limited edition through the designer's own atelier, the lamp is a distinctive example of Van den Nieuwelaar's precise, minimalist approach to lighting. Contemporary examples and period-market documentation consistently identify the design as an ABN commission and note its limited production.

The design is constructed around a transparent cylindrical plexiglass base supporting a broad white translucent shade. The clear base gives the lamp an unusually light visual presence, allowing the internal structure to remain visible while creating the impression that the shade is suspended above the surface. A circular transparent foot reinforces the geometry of the composition.

The shade itself is defined by a low, wide profile with sloping upper surfaces and a continuous vertical edge. Its restrained form contrasts with the transparency of the base while softly diffusing the light. The result is characteristic of Van den Nieuwelaar's work: functional elements are reduced to clear geometric forms, with the construction becoming an integral part of the visual language.

Aldo van den Nieuwelaar (1944–2010) was a Dutch designer known for his rigorous use of geometry and industrial materials. His lighting designs frequently explored the relationship between light, transparency and structure, using materials such as plexiglass and metal to create visually reduced compositions.

Because the ABN lamp was manufactured in Van den Nieuwelaar's own workshop in limited numbers, surviving examples can show small differences in construction and detailing. This example has been carefully repolished to restore the clarity of the transparent surfaces and has been rewired for continued use.

Very good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. Carefully repolished and rewired. Small spot on the shade, see picture.
