An elegant Model 1039 ceramic table lamp produced by Søholm Stentøj in Denmark during the 1960s. Characterised by its sculptural silhouette, geometric relief decoration and deep, glossy glaze, the lamp is a beautiful example of Danish mid-century lighting, combining expressive ceramic craftsmanship with a restrained and carefully balanced design.
The ceramic base features a rounded lower section with gently curved shoulders, rising into a tall, slender neck that tapers slightly towards the top. Its most distinctive feature is the deeply incised vertical relief pattern decorating the lower body. A series of elongated, parallel grooves creates a rhythmic architectural composition, with the recessed lines forming subtle geometric transitions near the base. The glossy, almost black glaze accentuates the relief, allowing light to reflect differently across the raised and recessed surfaces. The upper neck, by contrast, has a smooth, dark finish that provides a pleasing balance to the more elaborate decoration below.
Søholm Stentøj was one of Denmark's notable ceramic manufacturers, established on the island of Bornholm in 1835. Throughout the twentieth century, the company developed a reputation for its decorative stoneware, particularly during the postwar decades when Scandinavian ceramics gained international recognition. Its production from the 1950s and 1960s frequently explored the relationship between sculptural forms, geometric surface decoration and innovative glazing techniques. The Model 1039 lamp reflects these characteristics particularly well, with its combination of a simple silhouette and carefully considered surface detailing.
The lamp has been fitted with a new, generously proportioned conical fabric shade. Its distinctive triangular silhouette introduces a strong geometric contrast to the rounded ceramic base, while the light-coloured fabric complements the dark glaze. Together, the two elements create a harmonious composition in which the shade and base contribute equally to the overall design.
With its compact proportions, rich ceramic surface and timeless appearance, this lamp is particularly well suited to a side table, console or bedside setting, where its sculptural qualities can be appreciated from different angles.
