Nordiska Kompaniet

Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) is a Swedish department store and design institution founded in 1902 in Stockholm by Josef Sachs. While best known as a luxury retailer, NK has also played a major role in the history of Swedish furniture and interior design through its in-house design and manufacturing operations, particularly NK Inredningar and NK Verkstäderna. During the early to mid-20th century, NK functioned as a comprehensive interior design studio, producing custom furniture, lighting, textiles, and complete interiors for private homes, public buildings, and institutions. The company became a key promoter of Swedish Grace in the 1920s and later of functionalism in the 1930s, helping introduce modern design principles to a wider audience in Sweden. NK collaborated with some of Sweden’s most important designers and architects, including Carl Malmsten, Axel Einar Hjorth, Erik Gunnar Asplund, and Josef Frank. Iconic furniture lines such as Axel Einar Hjorth’s Sportstugemöbler series—designed for weekend houses—are now considered milestones of Swedish modern furniture design. NK-produced furniture is characterized by high craftsmanship, refined proportions, and a careful balance between tradition and modernity.
